My name is Cheryl Williams, a native Houstonian born in the Kashmere Garden Area. I've had a passion for dance since I was able to walk. My first exposure was in the kindergarden. I would get bored and dance and sing in class until my teacher started putting me in the corner. No one knew what to do with me...I was a mess! It was at my Homecoming Dance in 8th grade were i first discovered a proper outlet for my creativity. I was exposed to line dancing and also Swingout or 2-Step (as it it sometimes called). I was so amazed and quickly inspired to learn. I took my new found knowledge of these dances and began teaching around the neighborhood. "It's been on every since"!
After graduating from high school, I took a long break from dancing for several years. Little did I know it had changed a lot from when i was in high school until I started going out and clubbing again. I still had the rhythm, but there were more moves, spins, turns, and steps which were a little different from back in the day. It wasn't until a guy asked me to dance at a local Houston club and started putting on his fancy moves and turns that my desire to dance was revived. I thought he was trying to embarrass me, but I soon realized that he knew I could dance and was only trying to bring it out of me. Well, it worked! Since then, I create my very own line dances and enjoy sharing my talent with others. I still enjoy dancing at clubs and I'm known as "The Line Dance Queen" when ever the DJ's see me. When you see me putting together my elaborate footwork, please know that this comes from my heart and soul and it is something that I love very much.
I have taught classes at Club Desiree and the Houston Area Urban League as well as a few colleges in the area during special events. My current class is held at The Fonde Community Center near downtown Houston. I teach workshops all around the country and would love to expand to an international level. People travel to take my class and workshops from all over the U.S. I have even had a few folks stop over from China!:) Often, I'm invited to teach at parties, celebrations and weddings, just to name a few. I also travel often to other cities for line dance summits, workshops and competitions which are a few of the ways I keep up with the current line dances. I make many friends at these events and we are known for exchanging each other's line dances and ideas, creating a network all over the country. This is how dances such as, "Cupid Shuffle and The Twist" were spread throughout the country. I am also one of HTOWN'S ELITE SMOOTH STEPPERS and Line Dance Instructors .
I look forward to seeing you in my next class so please stop by and join us!
The History of Line Dancing
By Mid Canterbury Dancing Cowboys
"Line Dancing....A Legitimate Art Form?"
You bet it is! Line Dancing has stood the test of time and is now just coming into it's own as a recognized dance format. I know that it's already been around for years, but that's the test. A dance form must have been around for at least 10 years before it is included in dance curriculums. Fad dances will come and go, but if a dance or dance form generates enough interest and starts to evolve and develop, it is more of a sense of legitimacy. Who wants to start dancing or teaching something that is going to die off right away?
The components that we use in Line Dancing are the basic building blocks for all the other forms of social dancing. If anyone is going to learn to dance, the first step is to learn how to move, which means that you learn these components. It doesn't matter if you plan to dance with or without a partner, you still have to know this basic footwork.
The current state of Line Dancing (and notice that I don't say 'Country & Western' Line Dancing) is that it is no longer restricted to one form of music or another. Line Dancing has evolved past the point of being forced into a particular mold. Line Dancing is performed by individuals, groups, or 'Dance Teams' and is danced all over the world. There are competitions which feature all age categories and include teams and original choreography. There is now a 'contemporary' division that specifically allows for new attitudes in music and costuming.
As Line Dancing to continue to grow and develop I think we need to discard a few old notions. One being that the feet are solely (no pun intended) responsible for portraying the dance. We are not dancing robots! The dance should be portrayed through the actions of the entire body, which includes hip action (Cuban motion), arm styling, facial expression , and any other movements that enhance the dance components. Dance instructors should be aware of these movements and teach dance technique rather than having your classes constantly mimic the basic construction of a dance. You need a combination of techniques when teaching. Listen to everything that the various dance organizations and groups have to say, then weigh the evidence and make up your own mind! Remember, that no one organization has all of the answers. There is always going to be different techniques and opinions to learn and you are going to constantly hear conflicting information, but there really isn't much "Right or Wrong". Learn all that you can, then do what feels right for you.
As a new art form, Line Dancing is still having those annoying little growing pains which will continue for at least another year or two, until communication gets to the point of more universal techniques, and the many new instructors and dancers out there get a little more experience under their belts.
Here are a few reasons why line dancing is fun AND good for you.
Line dancing is good exercise
It's a widely recognized fact that exercise is good for you. It can increase your life-span and it makes you feel good.
Line dancing has the advantage of being a very social form of exercise, so you can meet people and make new friends while exercising.
Line dancing is fun
Another advantage of line dancing is that you don't need a partner and you don't feel out of place if you're not dancing with anyone.
You could say that at a line dance, you're dancing with everybody!
It's OK to go to a line dance and just dance on your own, but you will often end up chatting with some of the like-minded people you'll meet there.
No one in the class will be left out and she often gives individual attention to those who need more help learning steps. TLDQ also offers both private and group lessons for a very low cost! Hire The Line Dance Queen to choreograph your wedding party's introduction dance for a unique surprise at your reception or your next corporate event, the possibilities are limitless. Cheryl believes that everyone has soul and the ability to dance somewhere inside of them and is always happy to help them bring it out! Dancing is her passion and she is excited to bring that to everyone she meets!! See you in class soon. This REALLY is a fun line dance class that promises to give you much more than you expect~
